CATTEDRALE DI SANTA MARIA E MUSEO

Where is it : Piazza Palazzo, 4
Accessible Open

The cathedral was built in 1200 by the Pisans, who dominated the city of Cagliari.

The Pisans destroyed the ancient cathedral of St. Cecilia.

The Pisans then consecrated the new church to St. Mary.

Today, only two side doors, the bell tower and the chapel at the left of the altar remain from the ancient church.

The interior of the cathedral was modified in 1600, and the facade was changed at the beginning of 1900.

The interior of the church is divided into three rooms by big pillars.

The floor is decorated with marbles of different colors.

The Crypt of the Martyrs is located under the altar.
The crypt is a room underneath the Cathedral.

It was built by the Spanish in order to preserve the relics of the martyrs that were found in the city’s ancient cemeteries.
